Ministries of interior of Moldova and Romania sign joint statement on bilateral cooperation

28 January 2010

Moldovan Interior Minister Victor Catan and Romanian Administration and Interior Minister Vasile Blaga signed a joint statement on cooperation between the two institutions in Chisinau on 27 January. The document establishes sectors and principles of cooperation between the two states.

The statement says that the Romanian Administration and Interior Ministry will back Moldovan colleagues to carry out the institutional reform by working out an agenda of specific activities in the near future.

The sides agreed to diversify cooperation within common border points and centres, to combat organized crime, drugs trafficking and to establish a regular mechanism of consultations which would allow exchanging delegations in order to help Moldovan law enforcement agencies get acquainted with European affairs and international relations.

Catan and Blaga also agreed that the two institutions should sign protocols on cooperation in preventing and combating drugs trafficking and consumption, as well as in migration and asylum.

Romanian Administration and Interior Minister Vasile Blaga is a member of Romania's official delegation headed by President Traian Basescu who is on a visit to Chisinau on 27-28 January at the invitation of Moldovan acting President Mihai Ghimpu.
