UNHCR paper on Greece as country of asylum

8 January 2010

UNHCR paper on Greece as country of asylum, issued pursuant to UNHCR’s supervisory role in conjunction with Article 35 of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and Article II of the 1967 Protocol has been posted on HCR-net. It was transmitted to the Government of Greece in late December 2009.

As set out in the introduction to the paper, the Government of Greece is currently engaged in an effort to reform the asylum system. UNHCR has been participating in the Committee of Experts on Asylum established by the Government to formulate proposals for the restructuring of the asylum system. Once the Committee’s proposals are endorsed by the Government, a legislative drafting process will begin. The paper explains that UNHCR welcomes the Government’s commitment to reform the asylum system.
