| 18 June 2009 The Latvian parliament in the final reading on Monday adopted the new asylum law. The law provides that asylum-seekers are ensured the necessary living conditions while staying in the asylum seekers center. Refugees and people with alternative status will be paid an allowance for subsistence and an allowance for learning the Latvian language. The Citizenship and Migration Board will make the decision on granting the refugee or alternative status within three months. The responsible institutions will be able to extend or shorten the term for revising the asylum-seekers' application for substantiated reasons.
